Polar Vortex Tears Across Central U.S.
A polar vortex tears across the central U.S. dropping record amounts of snow and driving temperatures to lows not seen in nearly 2 decades. Still recovering from recent blizzard conditions, Boston reported snow as deep as 18 inches, and Central Park in New York was buried under six inches. As the dense cold air pushes its way south, warmer low pressure air is pushed in front of it, creating winds up to 30mph and whipping snow along with it. Whiteout conditions have resulted from Michigan to Kentucky. The state of Minnesota has ordered the closing of all schools for the first time in 17 years. This storm is breaking records of every kind, and it’s just getting started.
Experts in all affected states warn that temperatures are going to be shockingly low, even in places where cold weather is the norm. In northern states, expected conditions will be able to cause frost bite on exposed flesh in just five minutes, and experts warn that anyone not dressed for the conditions could easily be killed by them. Temperatures have already fallen to -23c in North Dakota and -30c in Minnesota, with wind chill expected to take them even lower to -57c. Authorities are urging citizens to stay home as much as possible, and treat the storm with extreme caution. Airports have been buried from New York to Denver, resulting in over 1,200 canceled flights and 6,000 delays on Saturday alone. As the polar vortex tears across central U.S. heavy snow conditions are expected to persist through the initial extreme cold.
The sudden onset of the debilitating cold took many people by surprise, with some highway commuters forced to pull over and spend the night in their cars by white out conditions. Traffic accident reports are pouring in from every city, with road salt rendered almost completely ineffective by the consistently sub-zero air temperatures. Even in traditionally warm southern states, cities are preparing for temperatures as low as -10c with significant wind chills. While the polar vortex tears across central U.S. indifferent to those trying to keep it at bay, the nature of the storm is well-known. Turning in a counter-clockwise direction, the storm is composed of a massive core of cold air surrounded by warmer air, all turned by the Coriolis affect. As the warm air around the edges of the core moves across the country, the moisture it carries is turned to snow and ice by the following cyclone of frigid air, resulting in the heavy storms seen so far. Once the snow passes however the storms true danger becomes apparent as freezing temperatures set in and persist until the storm moves past the area.
When dealing with cold weather, common sense is the best rule. Bundle up, avoid being outside for extended periods of time, and keep pets warm. Although the conditions are dangerous, a small amount of preparation and consideration go a long way in staying safe, even as a polar vortex tears across central U.S. cities.

NSA seeks to build quantum computer that could crack most types of encryption

In room-size metal boxes ­secure against electromagnetic leaks, the National Security Agency is racing to build a computer that could break nearly every kind of encryption used to protect banking, medical, business and government records around the world.

According to documents provided by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, the effort to build “a cryptologically useful quantum computer” — a machine exponentially faster than classical computers — is part of a $79.7 million research program titled “Penetrating Hard Targets.” Much of the work is hosted under classified contracts at a laboratory in College Park, Md.

"If you think you understand quantum mechanics, you don't understand quantum mechanics," said the late Nobel laureate Richard Feynman, widely regarded as the pioneer in quantum computing. The science video blog Vertiasium tries to help make sense of it.

The development of a quantum computer has long been a goal of many in the scientific community, with revolutionary implications for fields such as medicine as well as for the NSA’s code-breaking mission. With such technology, all current forms of public key encryption would be broken, including those used on many secure Web sites as well as the type used to protect state secrets.

Physicists and computer scientists have long speculated about whether the NSA’s efforts are more advanced than those of the best civilian labs. Although the full extent of the agency’s research remains unknown, the documents provided by Snowden suggest that the NSA is no closer to success than others in the scientific community.

“It seems improbable that the NSA could be that far ahead of the open world without anybody knowing it,” said Scott Aaronson, an associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The NSA appears to regard itself as running neck and neck with quantum computing labs sponsored by the European Union and the Swiss government, with steady progress but little prospect of an immediate breakthrough.

“The geographic scope has narrowed from a global effort to a discrete focus on the European Union and Switzerland,” one NSA document states.

Seth Lloyd, an MIT professor of quantum mechanical engineering, said the NSA’s focus is not misplaced. “The E.U. and Switzerland have made significant advances over the last decade and have caught up to the U.S. in quantum computing technology,” he said.

The NSA declined to comment for this article.

The documents, however, indicate that the agency carries out some of its research in large, shielded rooms known as Faraday cages, which are designed to prevent electromagnetic energy from coming in or out. Those, according to one brief description, are required “to keep delicate quantum computing experiments running.”


The basic principle underlying quantum computing is known as “quantum superposition,” the idea that an object simultaneously exists in all states. A classical computer uses binary bits, which are either zeroes or ones. A quantum computer uses quantum bits, or qubits, which are simultaneously zero and one.

This seeming impossibility is part of the mystery that lies at the heart of quantum theory, which even theoretical physicists say no one completely understands.


“If you think you understand quantum mechanics, you don’t understand quantum mechanics,” said the late Nobel laureate Richard Feynman, who is widely regarded as the pioneer in quantum computing.

Here’s how it works, in theory: While a classical computer, however fast, must do one calculation at a time, a quantum computer can sometimes avoid having to make calculations that are unnecessary to solving a problem. That allows it to home in on the correct answer much more quickly and efficiently.
Quantum computing is difficult to attain because of the fragile nature of such computers. In theory, the building blocks of such a computer might include individual atoms, photons or electrons. To maintain the quantum nature of the computer, these particles would need to be carefully isolated from their external environments.

“Quantum computers are extremely delicate, so if you don’t protect them from their environment, then the computation will be useless,” said Daniel Lidar, a professor of electrical engineering and the director of the Center for Quantum Information Science and Technology at the University of Southern California.

A working quantum computer would open the door to easily breaking the strongest encryption tools in use today, including a standard known as RSA, named for the initials of its creators. RSA scrambles communications, making them unreadable to anyone but the intended recipient, without requiring the use of a shared password. It is commonly used in Web browsers to secure financial transactions and in encrypted ­e-mails. RSA is used because of the difficulty of factoring the product of two large prime numbers. Breaking the encryption involves finding those two numbers. This cannot be done in a reasonable amount of time on a classical computer.

In 2009, computer scientists using classical methods were able to discover the primeswithin a 768-bit number, but it took almost two years and hundreds of computers to factor it. The scientists estimated that it would take 1,000 times longer to break a 1,024-bit encryption key, which is commonly used for online transactions.

A large-scale quantum computer, however, could theoretically break a 1,024-bit encryption much faster. Some leading Internet companies are moving to 2,048-bit keys, but even those are thought to be vulnerable to rapid decryption with a quantum computer.

Quantum computers have many applications for today’s scientific community, including the creation of artificial intelligence. But the NSA fears the implications for national security.

“The application of quantum technologies to encryption algorithms threatens to dramatically impact the US government’s ability to both protect its communications and eavesdrop on the communications of foreign governments,” according to an internal document provided by Snowden.

Experts are not sure how soon a quantum computer would be feasible. A decade ago, some experts said that developing a large quantum computer was likely 10 to 100 years in the future. Five years ago, Lloyd said the goal was at least 10 years away.

Last year, Jeff Forshaw, a professor at the University of Manchester, told Britain’s Guardian newspaper, “It is probably too soon to speculate on when the first full-scale quantum computer will be built but recent progress indicates that there is every reason to be optimistic.”

“I don’t think we’re likely to have the type of quantum computer the NSA wants within at least five years, in the absence of a significant breakthrough maybe much longer,” Lloyd told The Washington Post in a recent interview.

Some companies, however, claim to already be producing small quantum computers. A Canadian firm, D-Wave Systems , says it has been making quantum computers since 2009. In 2012, it sold a $10 million version to Google, NASA and the Universities Space Research Association, according to news reports.

That quantum computer, however, would never be useful for breaking public key encryption like RSA.

“Even if everything they’re claiming is correct, that computer, by its design, cannot run Shor’s algorithm,” said Matthew Green, a research professor at the Johns Hopkins University Information Security Institute, referring to the algorithm that could be used to break encryption like RSA.

Experts think that one of the largest hurdles to breaking encryption with a quantum computer is building a computer with enough qubits, which is difficult given the very fragile state of quantum computers. By the end of September, the NSA expected to be able to have some building blocks, which it described in a document as “dynamical decoupling and complete quantum ­control on two semiconductor qubits.”

“That’s a great step, but it’s a pretty small step on the road to building a large-scale quantum computer,” Lloyd said.

A quantum computer capable of breaking cryptography would need hundreds or thousands more qubits than that.

The budget for the National Intelligence Program, commonly referred to as the “black budget,” details the “Penetrating Hard Targets” project and noted that this step “will enable initial scaling towards large systems in related and follow-on efforts.”

Another project, called “Owning the Net,” is using quantum research to support the creation of quantum-based attacks on encryptions like RSA, documents show.


“The irony of quantum computing is that if you can imagine someone building a quantum computer that can break encryption a few decades into the future, then you need to be worried right now,” Lidar said.

For instance, seconds before the 2009 L’Aquila, Italy earthquake struck, pedestrians saw 10cm high flames of light flickering above the stone-paved Francesco Crispi Avenue in the town’s historical city centre.

In 1988 a bright purple-pink globe of light moved through the sky along the St. Lawrence River near the city of Quebec, 11 days before a powerful quake.
And in 1906, about 100km northwest of San Francisco, a couple saw streams of light running along the ground two nights preceding the devastating earthquake that destroyed much of the city.

The rare earthquake lights are more likely to occur on or near a rift, an elongated depression or trough in the Earth’s crust bounded on both sides by normal faults, than other faults.

Intraplate faults are associated with just five per cent of Earth’s seismic activity, but 97 per cent of documented cases of earthquake lights.

Geologist Robert Thiriault of the Ministry of Natural Resources in Quebec said: 'Earthquake lights as a pre-earthquake phenomenon, in combination with other types of parameters that vary prior to seismic activity, may one day help forecast the approach of a major quake.

The earthquake lights described varied in shape and extent, though most commonly appeared as globular luminous masses, either stationary or moving, as atmospheric illuminations or as flame-like issuing from the ground.

Because they occur before or during the quakes it is suggested the processes responsible for earthquake lights formation are related to a rapid build-up of stress prior to fault rupture and rapid local stress changes during the propagation of the seismic waves.

Eyewitness reports and security cameras captured a large number of light flashes during the 2007 8.0 magnitude earthquake at Pisco, Peru.

Together with seismic records obtained on a local university campus, the automatic security camera records allow for an exact timing and location of light flashes that illuminated a large portion of the night sky.

The light flashes identified as earthquake lights coincided with the passage of the seismic waves.

The study was published in Seismological Research Letters.

Crop circles appeared in a field in Salinas, Calif., but no one knows where they came from.

Theories are cropping up to explain an intricate circular pattern discovered in a field of grass in California early Monday.

“We were on a photo flight this morning and came across it," aerial photographer Julie Belanger told NBC News. "It was so unique in the middle of a field.” 

Onlookers on the ground had to make do with climbing on their trucks on an adjacent street to try and get a better view, NBC affiliate KSBW reported.

“It looks like aliens to me," Manuel Madrid said from his vantage point.
But there were indications that the pranksters or artists were of earthly origin.
TheMontereyHerald.com reported that guards from a South Bay security company were at the field Monday morning on behalf of a client whose identity they could not reveal.  

Meantime, a YouTube video titled “Salinas Crop Circle Discovery” posted by user “Cannot Say” showed two men driving down the road at sunrise on Monday and then spotting a blinking green light in the field.

“Dude, this is a crop circle,” said one of the men after they ran toward the light and allegedly discovered the flattened grass.

For her part, Belanger said she doesn't know who's behind the circle, or what their intent was.

“I don't know what it is supposed to be ... but it is beautiful,” she said.

Schizophrenia comes from the two Greek words that mean ‘to split’ and ‘mind’ because there is a split between what’s going on in their minds and what’s happening in reality.
Usually sufferers only have a single personality, but could they, in fact, be living in parallel universes? As we are not physically aware of other universes their existences is purely theoretical and, therefore, open to conjecture. Quantum objects can exist in different states and it can be argued that each different state belongs to a different world. This would imply a multiverse. This idea has been extended even further to cover actions with more than one possible outcome. If the theory is correct then each possible outcome is in a different but parallel universe. So could schizophrenics actually be spanning more than one reality-state at once?

String theory proposes that our universe is like a bubble existing alongside similar parallel universes and the parallel universes may come into contact with one another. This results in a big bang similar to the one that started our universe.
Many scientists do not believe in multiverses, but others feel that any world that is mathematically coherent can in fact exist and each one is as likely as any other. These would not follow the same fundamental mathematical laws as our universe, but would have equal probability of existence. So who knows what lies over the rainbow? Perhaps you’re living there in your own paradise.
Life after death could even continue in a parallel universe that infrequently interacts with our own. Strange phenomena have been universally reported from individuals pronounced clinically dead or very close to death. This usually includes first a sense of awareness of being dead, such as viewing one’s body from above and watching the doctors and nurses desperately trying to resuscitate. Then a sense of peaceful removal from the world takes over followed by rapid movement through a tunnel towards a powerful light, representing unconditional love. They have even reported receiving knowledge about their life and the nature of the universe before making the decision to return to their body.
A new ‘psychological’ idea, from Mind Valley, called quantum jumping involves meeting up with your twin self in a parallel universe. It entails initially hypnotising oneself and then passing through a tunnel into a different universe and meeting up with one’s other worldly twin. This ‘time twin’ lacks the particular complex that desperately needs to be cured.
When you remerge from the tunnel you have picked up their persona and your trauma is now cured. It’s kind of like repairing soul damage from your past. You can also pick up knew talents from your talented other self before returning through the portal to modern day reality. Actually, it’s even a bit like, ‘The One’, starring Jet Li, except you don’t have to battle or kill anyone unless you want to learn martial arts! The complete process only takes about half an hour a day, but I’d think twice before forking out a fortune to Mind Valley for promises of wealth. (Maybe selling you the CD is how quantum jumping really did help them get rich!)
As for parallel universes, all through high school people were telling me I lived in another universe – perhaps they were right!

Stabilize the camera on a tripod. If there is no tripod, then set it on top of a stable, flat surface. If that is not possible lean against a wall to stabilize your body and prevent the camera from filming in a shaky, unsteady manner.
