The symphony of life, revealed

Using a new imaging technique they developed, scientists have managed to observe and document the vibrations of lysozyme, an antibacterial protein found in many animals. This graphic visualizes the vibrations in lysozyme as it is excited by terahertz light (depicted by the red wave arrow). Such vibrations, long thought to exist, have never before been described in such detail, said lead researcher Andrea Markelz, a UB physicist.

The strings on a violin or the pipes of an organ, the proteins in the human body vibrate in different patterns, scientists have long suspected. Now, a new study provides what researchers say is the first conclusive evidence that this is true.

Using a technique they developed based on terahertz near-field microscopy, scientists from the University at Buffalo and Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute (HWI) have for the first time observed in detail the vibrations of lysozyme, an antibacterial protein found in many animals.

The team found that the vibrations, which were previously thought to dissipate quickly, actually persist in molecules like the "ringing of a bell," said UB physics professor Andrea Markelz, PhD, wh0 led the study.

These tiny motions enable proteins to change shape quickly so they can readily bind to other proteins, a process that is necessary for the body to perform critical biological functions like absorbing oxygen, repairing cells and replicating DNA, Markelz said.

The research opens the door to a whole new way of studying the basic cellular processes that enable life.

"People have been trying to measure these vibrations in proteins for many, many years, since the 1960s," Markelz said. "In the past, to look at these large-scale, correlated motions in proteins was a challenge that required extremely dry and cold environments and expensive facilities."

"Our technique is easier and much faster," she said. "You don't need to cool the proteins to below freezing or use a synchrotron light source or a nuclear reactor - all things people have used previously to try and examine these vibrations."

The findings will appear in Nature Communications on Jan. 16, and publication of information on the research is prohibited until 5 a.m. U.S. Eastern Time on that day.

To observe the protein vibrations, Markelz' team relied on an interesting characteristic of proteins: The fact that they vibrate at the same frequency as the light they absorb.

This is analogous to the way wine glasses tremble and shatter when a singer hits exactly the right note. Markelz explained: Wine glasses vibrate because they are absorbing the energy of sound waves, and the shape of a glass determines what pitches of sound it can absorb. Similarly, proteins with different structures will absorb and vibrate in response to light of different frequencies.

So, to study vibrations in lysozyme, Markelz and her colleagues exposed a sample to light of different frequencies and polarizations, and measured the types of light the protein absorbed.

This technique, developed with Edward Snell, a senior research scientist at HWI and assistant professor of structural biology at UB, allowed the team to identify which sections of the protein vibrated under normal biological conditions. The researchers were also able to see that the vibrations endured over time, challenging existing assumptions.

"If you tap on a bell, it rings for some time, and with a sound that is specific to the bell. This is how the proteins behave," Markelz said. "Many scientists have previously thought a protein is more like a wet sponge than a bell: If you tap on a wet sponge, you don't get any sustained sound."

Markelz said the team's technique for studying vibrations could be used in the future to document how natural and artificial inhibitors stop proteins from performing vital functions by blocking desired vibrations.

"We can now try to understand the actual structural mechanisms behind these biological processes and how they are controlled," Markelz said.

"The cellular system is just amazing," she said. "You can think of a cell as a little machine that does lots of different things - it senses, it makes more of itself, it reads and replicates DNA, and for all of these things to occur, proteins have to vibrate and interact with one another."

RoboEarth Project Aims To Build Cloud for Robots

January 21, 2014

The RoboEarth project aims to build a cloud computing platform for robotics. After four years of research, scientists at
Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), Philips and four other European universities will present this online platform through which robots can learn new skills from each other worldwide.

A new project aims to connect the world’s robots so they will be able to learn from each other and from their human interactions.

It is part to a €5.6m ($7.6m) European Union research project known as
RoboEarth. The work is a collaboration between six European universities and Philips, the Dutch electronics company.

The project seeks to create robots’ very own cloud: a vast network, database and computation engine “where robots can share information and learn from each other about their behavior and their environment.”

RoboEarth, then, is
cloud storage and computing for robots: its database is intended to store knowledge created by both humans and robots in a robot-readable open format. To date, that knowledge is basic: maps to help mobile robots navigate; task information like how to pick up a cup; and object-recognitiondata such as digital models of real-world objects.
 RoboEarth

The system also lets robots offload some of their computational tasks to “a powerful and secure” cloud-computing engine.

Most robots today perform discrete, pre-programmed tasks related to a small set of objects in a controlled environment. Some already use data-sharing systems, although almost all are proprietary. For example, the “autonomous robots” made by
Kiva Systems, which is owned by online retailer Amazon, pool data about the constantly changing warehouses in which they operate, enabling them to navigate and work more efficiently.

The challenge, notes Markus Waibel of the
Institute for Dynamic Systems and Control in Zurich, and one of the scientists behind RoboEarth, is that the “nuanced and complicated” nature of life outside these controlled environments cannot be defined by a limited set of specifications. In other words, to perform complex and useful tasks in the unstructured world in which humans actually live, robots will need to share knowledge and learn from each other’s experiences. They will also have to learn patterns that humans take for granted. For example, milk is usually kept in a refrigerator; the strange objects next to plates are usually knives and forks; glass objects break easily; and so on. In short, they will have to evolve and adapt to the real world, and do so autonomously.

RoboEarth’s proof-of-concept demonstration is simple for humans, but hard for robots: serve fruit juice to a random patient in a hospital bed. In a fake hospital room at Eindhoven Technical University in the Netherlands, one robot mapped out the space, located the “patient’s” bed and a nearby carton of juice, then sent that data to RoboEarth’s cloud.

A second robot, accessing the data supplied by robot number one, unerringly picked up the juice and carried it to the bed. Unfortunately this test did not end in total success as Amigo then dropped the milk to the floor after delivering it to the bed-ridden patient.. But as Dr Waibel—who was the “patient” in question—points out, the demonstration still proved its point.

RoboEarth and a handful of similar initiatives, including Google’s
cloud-robotics ROS platform, do, however, raise some questions.

As with many internet of things developments, security is variable, and physical machines that work alongside people in the real world will be tempting targets. Although RoboEarth’s cloud may itself be secure, it will take only one vulnerable node (robot) for hackers to gain control—a scary thought in a world where robots might be care-givers with access to private medical information and other personal data.

Lee Tien, a senior attorney at the
Electronic Frontier Foundation, which seeks to protect individual rights in a digital world, worries that the fundamental requirements of projects such as RoboEarth—the collection, storage and sharing of as much data as possible—are at odds with the goal of “privacy by design” that many policymakers now support. If a robot is caring for a sick or elderly person, what happens if there is a family dispute over that care? Or a contentious divorce? Is all the robo-cloud data simply up for grabs by whomever manages to obtain or subpoena it? “The number of safeguards that will need to be put in place is staggering”, Tien told the Economist.

Astronomers Capture The First Image Of The Mysterious Web That Connects All Galaxies In The Universe

Astronomers Capture The First Image Of The Mysterious Web That Connects All Galaxies In The Universe

Published 12:13 pm, Sunday, January 19, 2014
Cosmic web
For the first time, astronomers were able to see a string of hot gas known as a filament that is thought to be part of the mysterious underlying structure that dictates the layout of all the stars and galaxies in our universe.
Scientists believe that matter in the universe is arranged into a gigantic web-like structure. This is called the cosmic web.
There are signatures of this structure in the remaining radiation from the Big Bang and in the layout of the universe itself. Without some mysterious force pulling visible matter into this web, galaxies would be randomly scattered across the universe. But they aren't.
We can see that galaxies are found in groups and those groups come together in larger clusters.
Computer models tell us that those galaxy clusters are linked by long filaments of hot gas and dark matter — a mystery substance that we can't see because it doesn't radiate or scatter light but that makes up most of the web.
It's believed that gas and dark matter flow along the filaments to form clumps of galaxies where the strands intersect. So filaments are important because they represent what the universe looks like on a large scale. The problem is that, even though we should technically be able to see hot gas filaments, they are really hard to detect.
To find this strand of gas, astronomers where able to take advantage of an extremely bright mass of energy and light known as a quasar.
The light from a quasar located 10 billion light-years-away acted like a "flashlight" to make the surrounding gas glow, researchers report Jan. 19 in the journal Nature. This boosted the Lyman alpha radiation that hydrogen gas emits to detectable levels over a huge swath of the region.
Cosmic WebThe researchers were able to figure out the wavelength of the Lyman alpha radiation emitted by the gas and used the Keck telescope in Hawaii to get an image at that wavelength.
What they were able to see is a cloud of gas extending two million light years across intergalactic space — the largest ever found. And it wasn't just a diffuse cloud, there are areas where there is more gas and areas of darker, emptier space. The gas-filled areas are filament, while the emptier areas are the gaps between filaments and galaxy clusters.
"This is a very exceptional object," first author Sebastiano Cantalupo, a postdoctoral fellow at UC Santa Cruz said in a statement. "It's huge, at least twice as large as any nebula detected before, and it extends well beyond the galactic environment of the quasar."
Researchers think that the gas filament is even more extended since they only see the part that is illuminated by the radiation from the quasar.
The research still "provides a terrific insight into the overall structure of our universe," co-author J. Xavier Prochaska, a professor of astronomy and astrophysics at UC Santa Cruz said in statement, since the "quasar is illuminating diffuse gas on scales well beyond any we've seen before, giving us the first picture of extended gas between galaxies."

Could A "Consciousness App" Change The World?

A new collaboration between Global Consciousness Project researchers and psi phenomena experts, the free Consciousness App (check out their Indiegogo campaign) is poised to forever change the way we relate to the world and each other.
"Even though we don't fully understand the process of how mind-matter interaction works, we think we know enough about it now to develop the first examples of a radically new kind of technology. A technology that directly harnesses this deep connection between consciousness and physical reality."
The work of a crack team of advisors – including Dean Radin (of The Institute of Noetic Sciences), Robert Jahn & Brenda Dunne (of the legendary Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research Lab), and Larry Dossey (author of The Power of Premonitions) – the app turns your smartphone into a Random Number Generator (RNG), calculates the non-randomness of your bitstream as a measure of your mind's potential influence on matter, and maps everyone's data to generate real-time maps of coherent psychic phenomena – launching a new crowdsourced psychic meteorology we could use to predict significant cultural events and other "disturbances in the Force."
The app also features a social network to connect you with other consciousness enthusiasts, and sends users push notifications when spikes are detected in your local RNG data – which could alert you to impending events in the field of collective consciousness.

Unidentified Atmospheric Phenomenon As Projected Global Concioussness

Unidentified Atmospheric Phenomenon As Projected Global Concioussness

We appear to have shape shifting plasma like orbs encircling our planet in an odd form of wave activity through the night skies while here on solid ground we have the same phenomenon apparently flitting through walls, doors, etc..a state of perhaps consciousness in a unique form of matter  that bridges the gap between local and non local manifestations. Are they one and the same?

"By applying Ockham's razor to the basic epistemological question 'What is reality?' the Buddhist idealists reach the conclusion that belief in an external reality is a 'superfluous hypothesis'" ~ Philip K Dick, in the introduction to "The Golden Man"

"There are no conditions to fulfill. There is nothing to be done, nothing to be given up.
Just look and remember, whatever you perceive is not you, nor yours. It is there in the field of consciousness, but you are not the field and its contents, nor even the knower of the field.
~ Nisargadatta Maharaj

The old school of thought regarding this phenomenon as the representation of actual craft with physicality remains persistently lodged in the minds of those enamored of scientific materialism and on a parallel path there is a growing body of evidence that in terms of our own species, the projection of consciousness on a non local basis is steadily being verified by experimentation on several fronts.   In addition to this there are some multi-disciplinary schools of thought that have seriously considered the physical brain to be a transceiving organism for the non local basis of sentience itself.

Then there is the matter if UAP is the result of projected non local consciousness, to whom does it belong?
Or is this asking the wrong question in framing it as the implication of ownership may be a result of our projecting our own critical assumptions regarding what appears to be our own situation simply at it's face value?  Then there is the matter of the state of matter we term consciousness in relation to the alteration of it's state on a planetary basis through physical death which occurs at a rate of 56 million per year, 153, 000 per 24 hours or 1.78 per second. Where does this energy transfer and in what state if consciousness, if it is considered a state of matter?

If that is so, what of the analysis of results from the Global Consciousness Project? If you are not familiar with Princeton University's program, you cannot understand it's relationship to the subject at hand.

Do these results suggest that a energy field of an unknown nature that represents consciousness in a both local and non local form , a third state that exhibits the ability of self organisation to produce unidentified atmospheric phenomenon? If this energy field exists, it is most certainly being fed at a rate of 56 million formerly individuated fields being released that as an aggregate, perhaps in direct relationship to conscious matter being  entangled in physicality among the living there may be a relationship between the two, as to allow this same matter in a third state to reflect, project anticipations (UAP) that are forever changing in terms of consensus projections in the energetic medium of the atmosphere. Think of it as a medium of transaction wherein two states of conscious matter create a third state that falls into line with what is observed.....a projected state of organised matter that neither has physicality as we define it nor is it stable.

The coherence of local consciousness to non local consciousness in it's two states would be required, and the same sum of coherence would be required as input as an imaging state of organisation would naturally be available if concentrated as a forced field superimposing itself on a global field creating coherent projections that are shared.

There is no purpose other than a state of affairs and the medium itself is the message.

Waves of activity as noted in the Princeton Project may well have a parallel in UAP wave forms in that the total sum of input as a consensus projection may need to reach a certain level of attenuation wherein it is sent as a imaging form of cellular consciousness in a context of feedback, a proverbial bridge of interaction.

Perhaps, perhaps not...

Polar Vortex Tears Across Central U.S.

Polar Vortex Tears Across Central U.S.

Polar Vortex Tears Across Central U.S.
A polar vortex tears across the central U.S. dropping record amounts of snow and driving temperatures to lows not seen in nearly 2 decades. Still recovering from recent blizzard conditions, Boston reported snow as deep as 18 inches, and Central Park in New York was buried under six inches. As the dense cold air pushes its way south, warmer low pressure air is pushed in front of it, creating winds up to 30mph and whipping snow along with it. Whiteout conditions have resulted from Michigan to Kentucky. The state of Minnesota has ordered the closing of all schools for the first time in 17 years. This storm is breaking records of every kind, and it’s just getting started.
Experts in all affected states warn that temperatures are going to be shockingly low, even in places where cold weather is the norm. In northern states, expected conditions will be able to cause frost bite on exposed flesh in just five minutes, and experts warn that anyone not dressed for the conditions could easily be killed by them. Temperatures have already fallen to -23c in North Dakota and -30c in Minnesota, with wind chill expected to take them even lower to -57c. Authorities are urging citizens to stay home as much as possible, and treat the storm with extreme caution. Airports have been buried from New York to Denver, resulting in over 1,200 canceled flights and 6,000 delays on Saturday alone. As the polar vortex tears across central U.S. heavy snow conditions are expected to persist through the initial extreme cold.
The sudden onset of the debilitating cold took many people by surprise, with some highway commuters forced to pull over and spend the night in their cars by white out conditions. Traffic accident reports are pouring in from every city, with road salt rendered almost completely ineffective by the consistently sub-zero air temperatures. Even in traditionally warm southern states, cities are preparing for temperatures as low as -10c with significant wind chills. While the polar vortex tears across central U.S. indifferent to those trying to keep it at bay, the nature of the storm is well-known. Turning in a counter-clockwise direction, the storm is composed of a massive core of cold air surrounded by warmer air, all turned by the Coriolis affect. As the warm air around the edges of the core moves across the country, the moisture it carries is turned to snow and ice by the following cyclone of frigid air, resulting in the heavy storms seen so far. Once the snow passes however the storms true danger becomes apparent as freezing temperatures set in and persist until the storm moves past the area.
When dealing with cold weather, common sense is the best rule. Bundle up, avoid being outside for extended periods of time, and keep pets warm. Although the conditions are dangerous, a small amount of preparation and consideration go a long way in staying safe, even as a polar vortex tears across central U.S. cities.

How to Digitally Record/Video a UFO sighting:

Como registar digitalmente ou gravar um vídeo de um avistamento de um UFO:

Stabilize the camera on a tripod. If there is no tripod, then set it on top of a stable, flat surface. If that is not possible lean against a wall to stabilize your body and prevent the camera from filming in a shaky, unsteady manner.

Provide visual reference points for comparison. This includes the horizon, treetops, lampposts, houses, and geographical landmarks (i.e., Horsetooth Reservoir, Mt. Adams, etc.) Provide this in the video whenever is appropriate and doesn’t detract from what your focus is, the UFO.

Narrate your videotape. Provide details of the date, time, location, and direction (N,S,E,W) you are looking in. Provide your observations on the weather, including approximate temperature, windspeed, any visible cloud cover or noticeable weather anomalies or events. Narrate on the shape, size, color, movements, approximate altitude of the UFO, etc and what it appears to be doing. Also include any unusual physical, psychological or emotional sensations you might have. Narrate any visual reference points on camera so they correlate with what the viewer will see, and thereby will be better able to understand.

Faça a narração do vídeo.

Be persistent and consistent. Return to the scene to videotape and record at this same location. If you have been successful once, the UFO sightings may be occurring in this region regularly, perhaps for specific reasons unknown, and you may be successful again. You may also wish to return to the same location at a different time of day (daylight hours) for better orientation and reference. Film just a minute or two under “normal” circumstances for comparison. Write down what you remember immediately after. As soon as you are done recording the experience/event, immediately write down your impressions, memories, thoughts, emotions, etc. so it is on the record in writing. If there were other witnesses, have them independently record their own impressions, thoughts, etc. Include in this exercise any drawings, sketches, or diagrams. Make sure you date and sign your documentation.

Always be prepared. Have a digital camera or better yet a video camera with you, charged and ready to go, at all times. Make sure you know how to use your camera (and your cell phone video/photo camera) quickly and properly. These events can occur suddenly, unexpectedly, and often quite randomly, so you will need to be prepared.

Look up. Be prepared. Report. Share.
