Is Life A Random Accident? Or Is There Purpose In Our Universe

Exciting evidence is emerging from the study of stars and comets showing us the universe is far more suited to support life than we previously thought. This new evidence has dramatic implications for how we approach some of the most important global issues.

Is The Universe A Life Factory?

Life seems to pop up everywhere we look. On earth we have extremophiles or organisms that thrive in “extreme” conditions. Extreme, of course, refers to what humans or most other organisms would be capable of surviving.  They are often thought of as bacteria but are actually a diverse group of many kinds of organisms. Extreme hot or cold? A thermophile or cryophile has that covered. Crazy high pressure? A piezophile/barophile calls that home. Surly nothing thrives in radioactive environments? …Except  some of the toxitolerants… they quiet love it (source).

Not only is life propagating in the harshest “uninhabitable” corners of the earth, but more and more evidence is surfacing that life can at least survive and possibly arrived from the “harsh” conditions of space. For instance, a species of plankton was found living on the outer surface of the Russian space station ISS. Although ISS denies the organisms originated from space itself, the likelihood that the space shuttle brought it from earth is pretty low since the species is not known to exist in the region where the space shuttle took off (source).

There are also some exciting clues surfacing  that suggest how life is generated and propagated throughout the galaxy. Some of these include evidence that compounds similar to those integral to biological organisms are present in the formation of stars and these compounds and/or full blown organisms themselves may travel through space via comets.

For instance, there is evidence that suggests stars may actuallycreate the essential “ingredients” for life.  Researchers found molecules with a similar structure to amino acids (the building blocks of life) present in a so called “star nursery” at the center of the Milky Way (source).  Once formed by stars, the essential “ingredients” or possibly fully formed organisms may be frozen and transferred onto traveling comets for deposit on planets when they approach or collide, a theory David Wilcock discusses in theSynchronicity Key.  Tantalizing evidence that supports this include reports of organic compounds detected by the recently famed Philae, or first probe deployed on a moving comet, indicating increased likelihood of life there (source).  Even more compelling is the confirmed evidence from researchers analyzing rocks from a comet that crashed to earth verifying the presence of fossilized fully formed microscopic organisms (source).

The New Horizons spacecraft has come out of hibernation mode in anticipation of rendezvous with Pluto and its moons. The spacecraft will be exploring the Solar System’s most famous dwarf planet for six months starting the observation phase in January.

The New Horizons' onboard computer was programmed in August during its latest system check to make a “wake-up call” on December 6, at 3 PM. Some 90 minutes later, it sent a signal to control center on Earth, informing that it is in ‘active’ mode.

It took 4 hours and 25 minutes for the signal to cover 4.7 billion kilometers and reach the mission operations team at Applied Physics Laboratory at Johns Hopkins University (JHU), where the New Horizons was designed and manufactured.

At the moment the probe is a ‘mere’ 260 million kilometers from Pluto.

"We've worked years to prepare for this moment,” said Mark Holdridge, New Horizons encounter mission manager at APL, asquoted by the University’s HUB news network.

“New Horizons might have spent most of its cruise time across nearly three billion miles of space sleeping, but our team has done anything but, conducting a flawless flight past Jupiter just a year after launch, putting the spacecraft through annual workouts, plotting out each step of the Pluto flyby and even practicing the entire Pluto encounter on the spacecraft. We are ready to go."

The current wake-up has become the 18th for the New Horizons, from mid-2007 to late 2014. The probe spent in hibernation about two-thirds of its flight time, most of it after its fly-by of Jupiter in February 2007.

Hibernation mode, when almost all systems aboard are unpowered, helps preserve energy and systems wear. The sleeping periods lasted between 36 and 202 days. At least twice a year the probe was awakened for systems check, instrument calibration and course correction. Otherwise the only signals coming from the New Horizons were weekly beacon beeps.

Team led by the University of Colorado Boulder has discovered an invisible shield some 7,200 miles above Earth that blocks so-called "killer electrons," which whip around the planet at near-light speed and have been known to threaten astronauts, fry satellites and degrade space systems during intense solar storms.

Scientists have discovered an invisible shield roughly 7,200 miles above Earth.

The barrier to the particle motion was discovered in the Van Allen radiation belts, two doughnut-shaped rings above Earth that are filled with high-energy electrons and protons, said Distinguished Professor Daniel Baker, director of CU-Boulder's Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP). Held in place by Earth's magnetic field, the Van Allen radiation belts periodically swell and shrink in response to incoming energy disturbances from the sun.

As the first significant discovery of the space age, the Van Allen radiation belts were detected in 1958 by Professor James Van Allen and his team at the University of Iowa and were found to be composed of an inner and outer belt extending up to 25,000 miles above Earth's surface. In 2013, Baker -- who received his doctorate under Van Allen -- led a team that used the twin Van Allen Probes launched by NASA in 2012 to discover a third, transient "storage ring" between the inner and outer Van Allen radiation belts that seems to come and go with the intensity of space weather.

Life Spreading Across Space From Contamination? Scientists ‘Worried’ After DNA Survives On Exterior Of Rocket

In something that only seems possible in a sci-fi movie, imagine scientists discovering life on another planet only to learn that the extraterrestrial life originated on Earth. New research suggests that life spreading planet to planet from space bodies contaminated with human DNA, or other earthly living objects, is possible.

First sea plankton were found living on the exterior of the International Space Station, now scientists have discovered that it is possible for DNA samples to survive at least a short space ride on the exterior of a rocket.

A new study published in PLOS One reports that DNA squirted onto the exterior of a TEXUS-49 sounding rocket remained functional following a 13-minute low-orbit flight to space. The lead author on the DNA study, and molecular biologist at University of Zurich, Cora Thiel, noted that findings were not expected and “made us a little bit worried.”

“We were totally surprised…We never expected to recover so many intact and functional active DNA. Our findings made us a little bit worried about the probability of contaminating space crafts, landers and landing sites with DNA from Earth.”

Space.com notes that with every spacecraft that leaves Earth, millions of microbes try to hitch a ride into outer space. This opens the possibility to “forward contamination.” Forward contamination is when microbes from the Earth get transported on outbound spacecraft to other planetary bodies, potentially colonizing those environments.

The research happened by chance. The researchers intended to examine the effect of gravity on DNA. The experiment was placed inside the cargo bay of the rocket. However, during flight preparations the researchers decided to put some DNA on the exterior of the rocket as well: around the outside of the payload, in the grooves of the screw heads, and underneath the payload. Their intention was to test the robustness of a biomarker in the DNA – a specific portion of the DNA strand that contains instructions for a specific function.

When the rocket returned, the researchers were not expecting to find functioning DNA on the exterior features, but they did. The report notes that a small amount of DNA was found in all three locations with as much as a third of the DNA still functioning.

The Profound Near-Death Experience of a Nazi Concentration Camp Survivor (+Video)

The universe is full of mysteries that challenge our current knowledge. In "Beyond Science" Epoch Times collects stories about these strange phenomena to stimulate the imagination and open up previously undreamed of possibilities. Are they true? You decide.

Tienke Klein’s health remained poor after she was released from a Nazi concentration camp. After a long recovery from the trauma she’d endured, she finally reached the point of not needing to visit her doctor regularly. Then she was hit by a car while bicycling.

The experience would release her from the prison camp she’d never left in many ways.

Klein described her reaction in a video posted on NDEvideos.com (a website for near-death experience sharing). She was angry with God, she said. She had finally finished up with the doctor and, bam, in a moment she could have lost her life because of someone’s road rage.

“And suddenly I was ejected from my body and I wasn’t angry anymore,” she said. A blaze of light appeared and she felt an energy pervading everything, including herself. “I was completely that energy,” she said. “It was love, it was wisdom, it was dynamism.”

She received all the answers to her questions at once. “I was so happy, so incredibly happy.”

“In my life I always had a lack of energy because my body suffered so much damage in the concentration camp,” she said. But here she felt wonderful and whole again. “I wasn’t dead, but I wasn’t in my body.”

She received two clear messages. One was, “People love as much as they are able to.” The other was, “You don’t need to go anywhere.”

When she regained consciousness, a resonance of the experience remained. She felt lonely when she realized the things people around her were talking about had no substance in comparison to the profound truth she just experienced. But then she remembered the first message, that people love as much as they are able. She was expecting more of them, which led to disappointment.

The second message made her realize that, whether on the street, at home, or in a prison camp, she can be free. She’d seen her life in a flash during her near-death experience (NDE), a common phenomenon for people who’ve had NDEs.

“I realized that ever since I came out of the prison camp, I was still trying to get out of the prison camp,” she said. She had become fixated with overcoming limitations.

“I don’t need to go anywhere to regain that freedom,” she said. “The ground always lies beneath all the traumas. And no one can take away the ground of the soul.”

One of the most influential NDE researchers, Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, was motivated to study death, dying, and NDEs after a trip to a concentration camp in 1945.

She visited Majdanek concentration camp on the outskirts of Lublin, Poland, after the liberation and spoke to a young woman who’d determined she would forgive Hitler before she left the camp. She didn’t want to spread anger and hate by talking about the terrible things she’d seen. This woman told Kübler-Ross that we all have a little of the evil that created those atrocities within us. She said the important thing is to get rid of the “Hitler” inside of us.

The meaning of these words set in during Kübler-Ross’s own brush with death. On her way back to her home in Switzerland, she was very ill and passed out in a forest, only to be found three days later with typhoid. She realized she’d been so hungry without food for that long, she would have stolen food from a child if she’d had the chance. She saw the evil within herself.

She realized that something profound happens near death. Her research brought her to hear many more amazing stories of profound NDEs.

Many NDEers return with emotional and spiritual problems resolved and a greater sense of purpose. For many, NDEs confirm the existence of an afterlife and the compassionate nature of that other realm.

Concentration camp survivor and famed psychiatrist Viktor Frankl is much-cited in papers on NDEs for his focus on the human search for meaning—and the realization that love is an integral part of that meaning.

Frankl escaped a trip to a gas chamber by slipping into a different queue.

He wrote of his experience in the prison camps in his 1973 book “The Doctor and the Soul”: “He himself can no longer understand how he was able to survive the imprisonment. Henceforth he enjoys the precious feeling that after all he has experienced and suffered, there is nothing left in the world that he need fear… For a good many men learned in concentration camp, and as a result of concentration camp, to believe in God again.”

“The gas chambers of Auschwitz were the ultimate consequence of the theory that man is nothing but the product of heredity and environment,” he said.

Klein noted that all the ideals she enlightened to during her NDE sometimes fade in her daily life. But, she reminds herself of how she learned to be free and to accept others for however much love they are able to give—and in these moments of clarity, she pops her head back up out of the fog to bask in the light.
