This week's images come from our reader Keith Minor in Austin, Texas. While taking photos on a light storms he also photographed swarms of flying rods.

Keith writes:
" Hello,

I'm not sure who to notify, but I guess this is as good a place as any.
I'm a storm chaser, and tonight (073109) while photographing lightning from storms over north Austin, Texas, I happened to get photos of swarms of flying rods.

The storms weren't worth getting "b roll" footage, unfortunately, so I didn't get any video tape of these things.

I'll set up tomorrow to see if I can get video. They are definitely flying... the flapping motion on either side of the rods is "paired" and the movement is undulatory.

Please let me know if you guys ever find out what these are. Based on the photos I took, they don't look like insects doing in-flight mating, as some of them do. There is not detail on the rods that I can see, and the "wings" look continuous from front to back.

If anybody wants to investigate further, the photos were taken from the top of a parking garage at Hwy 183 and RR 620, looking WSW in north Austin, TX.
