Are We on a Schedule to Cosmic Consciousness?
I was driving over the mountain range in Pennsylvania when I hit black ice. That is when time stood still for me. The car gracefully gave me a slow three hundred and sixty degree panoramic view of the world before gently sliding into the ditch. Fortunately no harm was done and, after getting towed out, we were quickly on our way. However, it got me thinking about how we perceive time generally.
Personally I sense an acceleration going on; that time itself seems to be going faster each year, and most people I talk to have the same view. But is it really time that is speeding up? Here’s an analogy that may explain the relationship:
Imagine a ball rolling across a level surface, the distance it travels each second would be constant, apart from the effect of friction – this is a linear approach that is similar to how we perceive life. However, if the ball were dropped from the top of a tall building, in the first second it would travel thirty-two feet. But the time it would take to travel the next thirty-two feet would be less than half a second as its speed would increase exponentially because of the accelerating force of gravity.
If you were a microbe on this ball, you might therefore conclude that time is speeding up. In this case it is not time that is speeding up, it is the distance travelled that is increasing each second. In a similar way, evolution is also exponential and time is not speeding up, but the number of events occurring in each year is increasing: It took two billion years from the origin of life to the creation of cells and just fourteen years from the PC to the World Wide Web!
To demonstrate the exponential nature of evolution, astronomer Carl Sagan imagined a cosmic calendar in which one year represented the whole of history from the start of the universe (big bang) until today. His powerful conclusion was: “We humans appeared so recently that our recorded history occupied only the last few seconds of the last minute of December 31st.” When this type of acceleration is plotted on a logarithmic scale, as was done by futurist Ray Kurszweil, the pattern unfolds as a straight line with events increasingly faster and faster. Author, Ken Wilber suggests that this scientific view of history as mere evolution suffers one great defect: “It cannot explain or even suggest the meaning of this going somewhere. Why evolution - What is the purpose of history?”
However, an alternative with striking similarities to the scientific version of evolution is the Mayan Calendar which provides not only a context and a structure supported by history; it suggests a meaning of divine importance. The interpretations developed by Carl Johan Calleman, an internationally recognized authority in Mayan history, detail this inspiring viewpoint and provide credible evidence of its validity.
According to Calleman, the Mayan Long Count is not a calendar of time, but is believed to be a sacred schedule of energy for the evolution of consciousness through time. Its date of creation is unknown in the mists of centuries BC. It is a schedule of incredible mathematical precision in which time accelerates in each of nine overlapping epochs. | |
They cover from the ‘big bang’ billions of years ago until ending on the same date: 28 October 2011. Each new cycle commences with a distinct leap, a quantum jump, into an expanded form of consciousness which develops and matures toward the end of that cycle
Let me walk you through the key processes and possibilities (see diagram below):
The first cycle of the nine, labelled the CELLULAR CYCLE, puts the start of the universe – the big bang – at 16.4 Billion years BC. This is remarkably close to the current expert estimate of 15 Billion years. Over this vast period the galaxies and solar system were formed, eventually followed by the emergence of cellular life by 1.26 Billion years BC.
To give an idea of acceleration nested in these cycles, 95% of the time passes before the next cycle is initiated. Each successive cycle is exactly twenty times faster and twenty times shorter than the one below. (The mathematical duration of each one equals 13 X 20x years, where x reduces each cycle.)
Thus the second cycle, which Calleman named the MAMMALIAN CYCLE, didn’t start until 821 Million BC. This era started with a breakthrough to the first signs of multi-cellular life which, in time, led to the explosion of mammalian life by 63 Million BC.
The third, FAMILIAL CYCLE, started 41 Million BC with first monkeys developing into biped apes. The first humanoids opened the TRIBAL CYCLE in 2 Million BC evolving into homo-sapiens by 160,000 BC. The REGIONAL CYCLE began 100,500 years BC with the first language, and agriculture was introduced in 7,900 BC just prior to the next cycle.
These first five cycles set the base for the human experience. It is uncanny that the dates of these significant transitions track closely with the beginnings and end phases of each cycle. Moving ahead, the last four cycles deal with recorded human history where dating is even more precise.
The sixth NATIONAL CYCLE started with the advent of writing in 3,115 BC. Humanity progressed through to the development of science and the creation of capitalism by 394 BC and by the last phase of this cycle in 1620 AD, the pilgrims set sail in the Mayflower for the New World.
The PLANETARY CYCLE started 1,755 AD. Just a few years later, James Watt built the prototype of the steam engine that began the industrial revolution. By the last phase of this cycle, 1991 – 1994, the World Wide Web was expanding like a virus.
The GALACTIC CYCLE started 5 January 1999 and the world population reached 6 billion people. This is the beginning of the information technology revolution; it is total and affecting all aspects of our lives. We are presently in the middle of this cycle which lasts only 13 years compared to the previous cycle which lasts 256 years.
Finally, the last cycle, optimistically named the COSMIC CYCLE, will start 10 February 2011 and last only 9 months.
Seven Days and Six Nights
There is yet another rich dimension to the calendar: Each cycle consists of thirteen energy periods alternating between light (DAY) and dark (NIGHT) in a wavelike pattern. Does this pattern of Seven DAYS and Six NIGHTS sound familiar? It may give new meaning to the Biblical creation story of Genesis? Unlike the Christians though, the Maya believe it takes 9 stages for the full evolution of consciousness.
When Dr. Calleman overlaid key historical events with these energy periods, he found repeated patterns in all cycles and all fields, in which new ideas emerged during the light DAYS and were consolidated during the dark NIGHT periods. This evidence substantiates that these patterns were not just coincidence. I will give just one example of a technical evolution, which anyone can check, to illustrate the theme:
The optical telegraph was invented in Sweden in 1794 at the beginning of DAY 2 of the PLANETARY CYCLE. The electrical telegraph was invented by Morse in 1835 at the beginning of DAY 3. And so it goes on; Bell’s telephone patent in 1876 was at the beginning of DAY 4, radio broadcasting started in the US in 1910 – DAY 5, color television in 1953 - DAY 6, and the World Wide Web became fully accessible in 1992, the beginning of DAY 7. See diagram below:
Another pattern uncovered and documented in an article by Ian Xel Lungold was that DAY 5 in all cycles seemed to have the most powerful energy of creation: it was this section when Art was invented, the message of Jesus moved over the earth, Einstein discovered the theory of relativity, and America rose to be a world power. Conversely, in human history NIGHT 5 has been a time of great physical hardship or major conflicts. The Neanderthals going extinct, Rome falling in 476 AD, the great depression 1932, and more recently the U.S. mortgage crisis in December 2007.
The Birth of Cosmic Consciousness
The precise alignment of significant evolutions at the beginning of each cycle, coupled with the examples of quantum breakthroughs occurring in the DAYS within those cycles is evidence based. In his book The Mayan Calendar, Dr. Calleman’s research provides many more examples which gives credence to the accuracy of the Mayan Calendar. Based on this evidence, Calleman’s belief is that the calendar is inspired with a divine purpose – an infinite purpose.
Remember, the Mayan Calendar is a non-linear schedule for the evolution of consciousness rather than a calendar of time, and, like most schedules, it ends on a given date. What follows after then could be offering birth into enlightened consciousness, with the awakening of universal abilities that at present seem to be limited to a few: A blossoming of caring and compassion which leads the planet to one harmonious system.
Everything is going faster: we travel faster, we communicate faster, we make things faster, and our transactions are faster. The one thing that hasn’t changed is the speed of our thinking. When events happen faster than our ability to process them, we often feel as though we're caught in a tornado of competing demands which results in excessive stress. Not surprisingly, the rate of increase of stress in the world, which is tracked by the World Health Organization, took a distinct leap after 1999.
The good news is that there is growing experimental evidence that intuition can access needed information at extraordinary speeds and a recent study by HeartMath concludes that the heart actually receives intuitive information faster than the brain. As we move into this exciting future, emphasizing our intuition and heart feelings will make it easier to navigate a rapidly changing world.
- Spiritual practices like meditation and prayer that connect us to something greater than ourselves.
- Heart connection with others, close friendships within and outside the family.
- Gathering with others frequently for uplifting purposes: church, social causes, etc.
Like many others, I sense the acceleration of time, and that a dramatic shift will be occurring very soon. Yet I get so easily caught up in the drama of everyday news events and the dire predictions of my rational mind. However, I am finding that letting go, and allowing myself to quietly listen to my intuition and heart, there is a sense of deep peace and joy in anticipation of an expansion of human consciousness that will reclaim our inheritance.
